Dramaturgy in the Electronic Realm
1999 - 2006
Behind the creation of image worlds, sound
spaces, bodies of text and time/space continua, we find those
who create art and music as well as authors. However, in the
(interactive) audio-visual area, one must also consider
construction, generating and programming processes, if the true
nature of binary media is to be captured. Today, structures can
be constructed, which do not follow precise specifications. The
question arises, as to which worlds we create with them.

Image construction is the whole process
from the creation of the topic, the forming of its character
and surface all the way to the completed module. Image
construction thus includes all tasks, which lead to a single
stand-alone image.
Four types of construction can be
distinguished. First of all, visual worlds can come from hand
drawings. Examples of this are comic strips and cartoons.
Secondly, they can be created with vector graphics. As a third
possibility, they can be based on photography and fourthly,
interpreted 3D objects can form the start point. Each of these
visual worlds possesses certain characteristics, strengths as
well as weaknesses, which are discussed in the PDF file.
The chapter lays the foundation for the
considerations that follow dealing with construction of
interactive time/space continua in the world wide web.
