(...) In judging this, one should not lose
sight of three important aspects of these projects:
1. they very clearly predicted methods of
technologically-driven communication, which since then have
become so commonplace that we don’t consider them unusual
anymore;
2. these telecommunication projects
actually helped to create a feeling of community and for a
certain time, became a distinct social circle; and
3. these projects were part of the first
attempts to use the potential of digital data communication for
something other than scientific, military and economic
purposes.
In the years that followed, each of the
then available telecommuni-cation media were tested for their
possible artistic use by a number of artists, which in Vienna,
had combined around the BLIX group and in Vancouver around the
Gallery “Western Front”. (...)
